I tossed it in the trash and bought an aluminum one from Scummit. I have a sb 350 in my 81 camaro and the timing is way out. Like you, I discovered these plastic covers when I started tearing this engine core down. Its a first gen 350 goodwrench engine and originally had the timing tab on the timing chain cover at 12 oclock but the one I ended up reusing is at 2 oclock. 1 S shwine617 Member 30 NJ I am having a weird problem with my timing. I have no idea if reusing the original is a good idea or not, as I've never tried. If you need this boss, as far as I know you may have to use a GM cover. If you need pictures of how I did it, let me know.įinally, you can use an old steel timing chain cover, buy a new chrome or aluminum cover, or whatever you want- as long as you don't need the sensor boss for the crank trigger. If you change your mind and go double roller, you'll have to grind on the boss surrounding the top oil gallery plug. Now I have an incredibly precise fitting chain, however. 010" shorter than stock chain due to having my block align honed. In addition, I bought a replacement chain from Cloyes and found that the GM chain was exactly the same thing- from the same subcontractor, identical markings, and everything.
